First day of treatment...or is it?

OK kids, I've been diagnosed with cancer at the base of the tongue in my throat. Not a good thing, but every medico I've spoken to has been extremely positive and told me it is totally curable with treatment.

I'm not shopping for sympathy, but I'm not much of a talker about private stuff (much to Suzanne's dismay) so I'm writing this the keep family and friends up to date, and save you all a bunch of phone calls and emails. Maybe this will also help out someone who might go through the same thing somewhere down the track. It's always good to get the story from the horse's mouth, even if his tongue is a bit munted. 😃

We found a new way to get to The Alfred today, and it saved a lot of time, it only took about an hour and a half to get there. At least the traffic isn't too bad.

We had three appointments today, one with Grace, the Oncologist at 10:30, one in Radiotherapy at 10:30, and one with Chemotherapy at 11:00. Can you see a problem here?

We went and saw Grace first. Grace ran through things with us and gave me prescriptions for all the medications I'll need, and a form for my weekly blood test. She also threw in some sedatives to relax me before I get "The mask of terror" put on me. I think I'll be fine, but it's a good back up plan.

Then it was off to Chemotherapy where Edel was going to look after me. Edel said it wold take a while to set things up so it wold be practical for us to go and have the Radiotherapy and then come back. Off we go.

Down in Radiotherapy we were told I didn't have an appointment😔 I was booked in for Thursday, not today. It was back up to Chemo.

There was no point in me having Chemo today if I wasn't going to have Radiation.

Edel was very apologetic, and said she'd shuffle things around and get me in on Thursday. That's no simple job because it's a four hour treatment. There are two rooms with ten treatment chairs, and they are booked solid. There's a bit of this cancer thing going 'round.

Then Grace appeared. Now as I've said, Dr Grace is a sweetheart, but I didn't mention she is a redhead, and I found out she can be a fiery redhead. She was not at all happy. Apparently Prof Syd changed the Radiation appointment because he wanted to refine the treatment area programme after looking at the PET scan, but he didn't let anyone else know. Grace apologised, but you could tell she was really pissed off. I was tempted to make a fiery redhead joke, but I was too scared. I wouldn't want to be around when Prof Syd and Dr Grace meet next.

So, with an Radio appointment booked for Thursday, ans the promise of Chemo on the same day, we headed home.

At least I have two days off now.
