No thank you, I'll take my food the normal way.

OK kids, I've been diagnosed with cancer at the base of the tongue in my throat. Not a good thing, but every medico I've spoken to has been extremely positive and told me it is totally curable with treatment.

I'm not shopping for sympathy, but I'm not much of a talker about private stuff (much to Suzanne's dismay) so I'm writing this the keep family and friends up to date, and save you all a bunch of phone calls and emails. Maybe this will also help out someone who might go through the same thing somewhere down the track. It's always good to get the story from the horse's mouth, even if his tongue is a bit munted. 😃

Back to The Alfred again today to speak to an Oncologist.

Grace is a real sweetheart. She explained to us in detail what they were going to do, and what side effects I might have. I won't go through them all now, but will cover then as the treatment starts. Hopefully I won't suffer them all, or at least they might be minor. Here's hoping.

The one thing she stressed was that it's typical for people to loose wight during this treatment. This is for two reasons. The chemo messes up your appetite, and the radio blisters the inside of your mouth and throat, so it hurts to eat. They supply heaps of pain control medication, including morphine based stuff. I spin out on Panadol Forte, so I don't know how that's going to go. I'm guessing my usual pain killer, alcohol, will not be suitable for this job. 😭

I can cope with most things, but don't mess with my food. Then she hit us with "If you loose around ten kilos, we will insert a feeding tube through your nose to feed you. We'll teach you how to do it, so you can feed yourself at home". I'll be trying my hardest to avoid that I can tell you.

I was going to tell her where she could shove her hose, but I thought she might suggest that was the next option for my food, so I kept quiet.

After all this talk about food, we went and found a great little Saint Kilda cafe for a really nice lunch. See, there's an upside to everything.
